Who built the Craigellachie Bridge?
The Craigellachie Bridge is the oldest cast iron bridge in Scotland. Designed by famous engineer Thomas Telford and built between 1812 and 1814, this bridge was well ahead of its time. Created with a single arch span of 45.7 metres, the ironwork was cast at the Plas Kynaston iron foundry in Denbighshire before being transported by canal and sea to Scotland for assembly. The bridge was designed to overcome periods of extreme flooding and proved to be vital in transporting goods across the river during the 19th and 20th centuries.
