Visit Duffus Castle
Moray Speyside is abundant with castles, each with a rich history. Located north of Elgin and just a 28-minute drive from Speyburn Distillery is Duffus Castle. It was built in the 1100s by a Flemish man called Hugh de Freskin. In Scotland, mottes were commonplace during the 12th and 13th centuries. Duffus Castle is one of the best examples of a motte and bailey castle in Scotland during this period. These types of castles were extremely popular due to their excellent defensive capabilities. Duffus Castle was a fortress-residence for over 500 years until it was abandoned in 1705. Today, its ruins tell a fascinating story of life during medieval times. With free entry, this is a great family day out.
